1906-1921
In 1906, O.W.Hurley was a rich African American who moved from Arkansas to Oklahoma and purchased over 40 acres of land. He sold that land to other African Americans. During the oil boom in the 1910s the Tulsa area economy thrived. During the 2 day Tulsa Race Riot in 1921 a White mob massacred hundreds of Black residents. The riot destroyed almost 40 blocks of city housing, 1,300 residences and 600 businesses. It also left around 10,000 people homeless. Five years after the riot the community came together to rebuild the area.
