The story behind the designs of blackfokapparel
Installment #2
WhatURep?
In the last installment I mentioned that I was going to write about the Untitled (child with flower) design. But after a slew of emails asking about the Whaturep design, I decided to push the story of the Untitled design back a week. Here it is, for your reading pleasure, the story of the WhatURep? design.
A lot of folks over the years have asked us what was the inspiration behind the world famous WhatURep design? Up until now I've never answered the question directly.
As many of you know I'm an avid hip hop head. Most if not all of the ideas for our designs came from a line, song or album. And this one is no different.
Year-2000
Place- The Ride (Car)
Inspiration- Prodigy (of Mobb Deep), Album- H.N.I.C.
I was really into this album at the time. Mobb Deep was at its height.
And at the time they were my favorite group. While listening to the album for
the umpteenth time the line "Whaturep" was uttered by Prodigy. It
struck a chord with me. At the time we were kicking around ideas to produce
a quality Detroit themed t-shirt. And after hearing that line the premise of
the design popped in my head. I grabbed the sketch book and proceeded to sketch
the preliminary drawings for the whaturep design. I quickly decided to put
the map of Detroit on the front of the shirt. I wanted to make it more interactive
so I decided to add the major thoroughfares to the map. After a couple of quick
drawings the design was born. The next step was deciding which streets went
on the back of the shirt.
Our theory was to put the most recognizable streets of the city on the back of the shirt. The main cross streets. We figured that most folks would be satisfied with seeing their neighborhood on the shirt.
WRONG!
We soon realized that there are A LOT more major cross streets in the city that we didn't account for. That led us to come out with the version of the shirt you see today.
The goal for designing this shirt was for it to be the definitive detroit t-shirt. We've sold thousands of this design and it's been shipped to Detroiters all over the world. We may not have the most popular Detroit shirt but we do have the definitive Detroit t-shirt. The shirt is a conversation piece in itself. Detroiters are proud of this design. And that makes me proud to be a Detroiter.
So there it is folks.
This is the story behind the WhatURep? design.
